Fall 2019 Quarterly Book Review

We are wrapping up our second quarter year of Kara’s Book Club! We’ve had some interesting titles, so let’s summarize and discuss each book we read this fall. That way if you are interested in any of the titles and haven’t had the time to read along with us, you can still pick around and see which titles interest you!

We started off October with a young adult fiction novel by Abigail Johnson called Even If I Fall.

“A moving, captivating story about the bonds of family and the restorative power of love.”⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Author Abigail Johnson is a contemporary young adult fiction author, who became a tetraplegic after a car accident at the age of 17.

Discussion Questions for Even If I Fall

  1. What would you do if the only person who truly understood you was someone you were forbidden from growing closer to?

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
2. If tragedy were to befall an otherwise peaceful family, what lengths would you go to in order to find healing?

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

I gave Even If I Fall 5 Stars. It really picked up toward the end of the book with a plot twist, and I really enjoyed this book!

Our next title for November was Switch On Your Brain by Dr. Caroline Leaf.

I chose this next book because a friend of mine recommended it. It can truly change the way you create thinking patterns!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
“Supported by current scientific and medical research, Dr. Caroline Leaf gives readers a prescription for better health and wholeness through correct thinking patterns, declaring that we are not victims of our biology. She shares with readers the “switch” in our brains that enables us to live happier, healthier, more enjoyable lives where we achieve our goals, maintain our weight, and even become more intelligent. She shows us how to choose life, get our minds under control, and reap the benefits of a detoxed thought life.”

This book is faith-based and blends biblical scriptures with modern neuroscience.

Discussion Questions for Switch On Your Brain

  1. We can change the physical nature of our brain through our thinking and choosing. If we can change our thinking, what does it mean to renew our minds and take every thought captive unto Christ? (Roman 12:2, 2 Corinthians 10:5.)
  2. Reaction is the key word here. You cannot control the events or circumstances of your life, but you can control your reactions. Think about a recent issue you faced, and your reactions. How could you have reacted differently?

I gave this book a 4 star rating. I loved what she had to say about changing our mindset and setting ourselves up for success with our thought patterns. I will say I didn’t fully embrace the step by step she gives to do this fully….maybe in the new year. It just seemed like a lot of work, so I chose to take the tidbits I learned and change my thoughts as I go.

Our title for December was You Are The Girl For The Job by Jess Connolly.

“With passion and heart-pumping hope, Jess shows that being the girl for the job doesn’t depend on your capacity. Rather, it has everything to do with God’s capacity and our willingness. It has everything to do with believing we are who God says we are, and quieting any inferior word spoken against us.”⠀⠀
